Sacramento State University Sacramento used Stop the Hate funding to challenge stereotypes about Asian Americans and combat anti-Asian violence through art, media, research and public programming.
Over three years, the team held six Stop the Hate Art and Media Showcases featuring student documentaries, podcasts, posters, dioramas, songs, paintings and collages that challenged one-dimensional media representations that had intensified during the pandemic.
Showcase audiences ranged from roughly 70 to more than 130 people, and the university also held off-campus screenings with ACC Senior Services and the Sacramento Asian Pacific Film Festival. The team archived 146 oral history interviews with students and community members focused on Asian American experiences during the pandemic.
The grant also helped train 13 student assistants, bring journalists, filmmakers, attorneys, scholars and community leaders to campus, and secure a permanent media lab. That infrastructure will allow Sacramento State to continue producing media related to anti-Asian hate and Asian American experience well beyond the grant period.
