Through Stop the Hate, Community Interventions empowered young people in Bakersfield to become leaders in promoting inclusion, belonging and community healing.
Through biweekly workshops, youth explored topics including identity, bias, discrimination and the importance of creating safe and welcoming spaces for all community members.
Youth participants transformed learning into action through a series of creative, youth-led projects. They designed and painted two public murals, one in an East Bakersfield skate park and another in downtown Bakersfield, that celebrate unity, resilience and hope. Participants also produced a documentary featuring their personal stories and perspectives, creating opportunities for dialogue about belonging, equity and the impact of hate on individuals and communities.
To strengthen connections beyond the classroom, Community Interventions hosted Stop the Hate Skate Nights and a “Paint the Hate Away” community art event, bringing together youth and families through recreation, creativity and conversation. These gatherings created welcoming spaces where participants could build relationships, celebrate diversity and share messages of respect and inclusion.
By combining education, storytelling, art and community engagement, Community Interventions helped young people strengthen their confidence, develop leadership skills and become advocates for positive change. The initiative demonstrated how youth voices and creative expression can help build more connected, compassionate and inclusive communities.
