Stop the Hate allowed My Sister’s House to expand its reach and create new pathways for identifying and supporting people who have experienced hate and discrimination.
As a culturally specific organization serving immigrant, refugee and Asian and Pacific Islander communities, My Sister’s House was able to offer linguistically and culturally responsive support beyond the populations already connected to its core programs.
One client initially came to the organization for support in a domestic violence situation and later disclosed racism she had experienced at home and in the workplace because of her ethnicity. When staff offered her a voucher for a self-defense class, she was excited to become active again and grateful to have someone listen to her full story.
The organization expanded these opportunities by offering self-defense classes for adults and youth, including a Run, Yell, and Tell course where children learned personal safety and stranger-awareness skills while parents received safety resources. My Sister’s House also added a dedicated website contact feature for people affected by hate and hosted monthly From Harm to Healing workshops on hate crime safety, bystander intervention, reporting and healing resources.
